Conversion Optimization, by Khalid Saleh and Ayat Shukairy

Conversion Optimization

This time I am reviewing Conversion Optimization, written by Khalid Saleh and Ayat Shukairy. Conversion Optimization refers to the practice of converting page visitors to buyers, when talking about e-shops.
Most companies that own websites focus on driving visitors to their page, but a large number of visitors do not necessarily represent an increase in sales. Marketers noticed
this, and the practice of conversion optimization was born.
This book describes the Conversion Framework™, a process Khalid and Ayat developed in 2007 and have evolved since. The framework is built around eight principles: the first six principles cover how visitors interact with different websites and whether they are persuaded to stay or decide to leave. These principles are:

  1. Getting to know your Customers through persona creation
  2. Creating confidence and trust
  3. Understanding the buying stages
  4. FUDs (fears, uncertainties, and doubts)
  5. Appealing with incentives
  6. Engaging users
The seventh is about tesing
  1. Testing the voice of visitors
And the eighth is about long-term commitment to conversion optimization, because it is not a process you do just once.
  1. Be iterative.
In addition to these eight chapters, there are two introductory chapters talking about some basic concepts of Conversion Optimization, and analytics concepts and mathematical formulas behind conversion optimization.

The book is very analytical and detailed in the subject. Everything is explained, and supported by examples and case studies. Also there are a lot of photos and snapshots of real e-shops. It dedicates a lot of pages to personas and persona creation, being the important thing behind Conversion Optimization. The ability to create good personas, and the ability to “see” through the eyes of your personas, is the way to succeed in converting from visitors to buyers.

Although simple in language, detailed and good supported with real life examples, I found this title somewhat of boring. I felt like the book was talking about the same things over and over again. Maybe this is a good tactic for making you learn something, but on the other hand it is annoying for someone who wants to get an idea and put things in action soon.

As I said above, in the core concept of conversion optimization is the creation of good personas and the consistency of what you say and what you sell. Exercise your common sense and also commit to what you do, for succeeding in converting page visitors to buyers.

Crap Detection 101: How to Distinguish Good and Bad Information Online, by Howard Rheingold

I am going to review Howard Rheingold’s video “Crap Detection 101: How to Distinguish Good and Bad Information Online”.

What is the video  about? It is about the internet and the information we get through internet. Howard Rheingold, in his one and a half hour video (approximately), discusses with Mark Brokering of Safari Books Online, about several issues concerning internet, about information, and as the title says, how to distinguish good and bad Information.

The video has 12 segments, each segment being a topic that we must be careful when we approach it online, and it is important to know the difference between good and bad, between right and wrong. He talks about issues like legitimate information, like accurate information, he talks about healthcare online, how to search online and about the role of Wikipedia. He also talks about phishing, criminal hoaxing, spam email and other “evil” things that we must have in mind when we get online.

I have to say that it is a quite interesting video; Rheingold can catch your attention and hold you there. You watch the one topic after the other without being bored or tired. His speech is clear and his thinking is logical and simple. Also the quality of the recording is very good. Everybody can benefit from watching the video, whether a parent or a senior, a teacher or a college student. As a parent or a teacher, there is a special unit about children on the web.

Well, I said it is quite an interesting video, in the way the speaker approaches and presents his subject. Rheingold himself has a great personality and that is reflected in the way he speaks. But does he reveal any secret techniques to catch the bad guy on the internet? Is there any magical formula to tell the good from evil? No, except from a few sites that may be helpful, like “Who Is” that gives information about URLs and domain names, and “Health on the Net”, there is no secret or a magical formula. Rheingold tells something that it is quite obvious, but so much forgotten by many of us. That someone must use their brain when they get online. “The great thing about internet is that everybody can publish. The danger of the internet is that everybody can publish”. So learn to think critically and ask questions. Ask yourself, “Who is telling me that?” Set an “internal credibility meter” and let it get up and down depending on what you find answering “who is”. If there is not an author in what it is written, the credibility meter must go down.  “Think like a detective”. And in a detective’s mind everybody is a suspect, unless otherwise proven.

But finally, does it worth for someone to have this DVD? Yes, I believe so. Some things may be “common sense”, but we all need to hear someone telling us those things, again and again.

The facebook marketing book, by Dan Zarella and Alison Zarrella

This book can be used as a guide to using the power of Facebook, the network originally made for select college students, then expanded to larger networks of high schools and colleges, then larger networks of people, and finally becoming today’s huge network of more than 500 million active users around the world, to make it work for the benefit of your company.
It describes and explains all the marketing tools that exist in Facebook, like pages, events, ads, applications, which anyone can easily and cost effectively use, for promoting their business.

The book is written in simple English language, that I very much appreciated because English is not my mother tongue. It is a book that can easily be read by people who are not technically oriented, and who are not professionals either in computers or in marketing. Yet all can have a benefit from reading it.

It is well formatted in twelve chapters, each chapter consisting of several units, and a number of screen shots. However screen shots are not enough or very well positioned in the book, and sometimes I had to go to Facebook itself to fully understand the subject and see more examples.

Another strong point of the book is its down to earth approach of using Facebook as a marketing tool. The writer does not claim that Facebook marketing tools are the magic solution to every marketing problem, but explains the “laws”, and the inherent logic, that runs Facebook, so that the user can take them into consideration in designing their marketing campaign. I believe this is the stronger point of the book, although in some cases more examples may be needed, for to take the full advantage of the tool.

Finally, a weak point of the book is chapter 12, Analytics and ROI. I would like to see more detailed information of how to use those tools, because statistics are very important to marketing planning. Though, it may be out of the scope of this book, to go in depth in fields that should be supported by Facebook documentation.

Generally speaking the book is very good and it gives a sound foundation to anyone who wants to build their marketing campaign using Facebook tools.

Disclosure: I received a free ebook copy for review purposes.

Τι λέτε λοιπόν; Συμφωνείτε με την διαπίστωση αυτή, ότι ένα ατίθασο μυαλό μπορεί να μολύνει το εδώ και τώρα της ζωής μας; Ότι η ζωή περιμένει να την απολαύσεις, και ότι το μυαλό μας είναι εκείνο που τελικά ούτε περιμένει ούτε είναι ικανό να απολαύσει το οτιδήποτε;
Και αν ναι, τότε μπορούμε άραγε να δαμάσουμε το προσωπικό μας τέρας και να το κάνουμε να λειτουργήσει προς όφελος μας ή είμαστε έρμαια του;
